1. Visit the chocolate shops and the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert
- Chocolate shops can be found on every corner of Brussels. The shops hold every kind of chocolate you can desire and more. At the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, one can enjoy high end shopping as well as gorgeous architecture and the first chocolate shop started by a woman, with many featuring hand painted chocolate boxes. 2. Taste the local cuisine of Waffles, Fries and Beer. - The Belgian diet is not for the faint of heart. With the streets smelling of baked goods and fries, the cuisine is a must try. Belgian Waffles are often what the tourists go for, but there are many options including the Leige Waffles and more. Check out the many different pubs with great beers to choose from, or if that’s not enough head over to Delirium Café for more than 3,000 choices. Then end your night with a basket of delicious fries. 3. Take a chocolate tour and Visit the chocolate museum - The great selection of chocolate shops may overwhelm some, so why not take a guided tour. Learn about the history if each shop while trying a piece of each place. Then finish your tour by heading into the chocolate museum to learn how chocolate is made and how it became such a key part in our lives and society today. 4. Try to find the Manneken Pis - A 61-cm statue of a peeing boy is located on the southwest side of the Brussels Gothic Town Hall. This is a replica of the original 17th century sculpture, found in the city’s museum. Manneken can be seen in different costumes throughout the week and especially during occasions and holidays. 5. Visit the Grand-Place - The Brussels Grand-Place is the city’s central square. The hall got its name as the original buildings around it form the shape of the square. The buildings hold the original architecture, despite being rebuilt after the French army attacked. They still are able to give a glimpse into their original purpose with gold detailing, gothic, baroque and Louis XIV architectural styling.

Florence is renowned as one of the most cultural and historical cities in the world and is packed full of amazing architecture and places of significance. As the capital of the Tuscany region of Italy, Florence has a population of 383,000 and a wider metropolitan population of 1.5 million. This wonderful city lies in the central region of Italy and has a well developed rail network with connections to Pisa, and Bologna. 1. Visit the Florence Cathedral Possibly the most celebrated cathedral in the world, the Duomo as it is simply known in Florence is the jewel of the city. It was initially constructed in 1436, but the astonishing front façade wasn’t completed until the 19th century. Located in the center of the old city, the Duomo stands out for miles and creates an imposing sight amongst the other medieval buildings. 2. Explore the Uffizi Palace and Gallery Located just off of the Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi Palace and Gallery is a renowned art museum and is considered one of the most important Italian museums in the world. The building itself is a marvel and the inner courtyard features a series of intricate columns and arches that are adorned with marble statues. 3. Try the Mercato Centrale Head inside the nineteenth-century Mercato Centrale. Here, you'll find vendors selling wine, fruit, meat, fish, cheese, oil and spices on the ground level, which is frequented by locals as much as tourists. Expect fresh pastas, Florentine meat or vegetarian burgers, pizza, dumplings, a truffle bar, fried fish, cold cuts and gelato. 4. Experience Wine Tasting Wine is perhaps the only beverage in the world that is not simply consumed for sustenance, but it is also an art that not many people can easily master. The different textures on one’s palate, the delectable aromas emanating from a glass, and the tear droplets left from swirling the wine create a unique experience that only wine can allow, leaving the taster wanting more. 5. Possibly the most renowned and well-known sculptures in the world, the Statue of David is a magnificent piece of renaissance art created by the legendary artist Michelangelo. They will probably only suggest a handful of programs, when in reality there are so many more than that. Be picky when choosing your program. Just because one program might be more cost friendly doesn't mean you need to choose it. There are helpful options to take care of that. There are many program options in Paris such as: homestays with French families, staying in campus dorms, living with other students in apartments, and more. The pride and joy of South Korea, BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) is a 7 member group comprised of vocalists and rappers. This group is known world wide for their stunning performances, beautiful visuals, and thought provoking lyrics. Despite having to compete in the already extremely competitive and xenophobic Western music industry, BTS has broken numerous records and continues to top the charts in the west! Reality: Rarely do students ever know each other when studying abroad. Everyone is normally welcoming and open to new friendships. Overall, people who study and work abroad want to explore new things and make new friends, even if they already have friends their as well. Coming without friends allows you to put yourself out there and experience things on your own. Expectation: Making friends will be difficult. Reality: Making friends is much easier than you might think it is. Everyone is in the same boat. In a new place not knowing most people, if anyone. Everyone is looking to form bonds and friendships. Expectation: While abroad, you will travel to every country you want to. Reality: One of the great things about studying abroad is that it allows you the flexibility to travel to other places that might be out of reach if you were in the US. While abroad you will be able to travel to different countries but expect to stay in your home country many weekends. Expectation: While studying abroad will be amazing, it will not change your life. Reality:Most students change, at least in a small way, from traveling abroad. Studying abroad can help you make connections in the professional world, be a boost to your resume, alter or change your career path, give you friends for life throughout the country and the world, or make you fall in love with a country you never expected. It is in our human nature to want to be around people and to interact with one another. We can get bored of ourselves easily and thus we try to make friends with those around us. Friends are who we choose to occupy our time with and whom make our everyday a little more enjoyable. We may make them through work or school or outside of these constructs. Making friends is something that we will have to do the rest of our lives, but it is not easy. This can be especially scary when studying abroad away from your friends and family back home. Studying abroad can be full of experiences that are new and exciting, but they don’t have to be done alone.
Here are some ideas that help this process, of making friends abroad, go a little easier: 1. Connect with people on Facebook. 2. Talk to a different person every day, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. 3. Go to events outside of class. 4. Interact with those in your classes. 5. Ask if people would like to get together outside of class. 6. Ask to study with others. 7. Say, ‘Yes!’ Trying to make friends in a foreign place can be daunting, but hopefully these tips can help! |
